mediumaevum:

Detail of the Annunciation (1333) by the Sienese Simone Martini, Uffizi.

source: The Yorck Project: 10.000 Meisterwerke der Malerei

One of the things I had learned in my Renaissance Art history class is that in Medieval and Renaissance paintings there are always hidden meanings and symbols everywhere. The lilies, for instance, there are many meanings hidden behind which sort of lily could be present during the painting. They represent renewal, rebirth or death and mourning.  Usually in paintings of the Virgin Mother, if you look at her hand where the bible is, it is usually always open to the page in the bible of the annunciation of virgin.

Often times as well, you can see the golden lettering of the mouths that are reciting the verse as well and often times, I forget why, they’re spelled in a mirrored way.

I’ve always wanted to be a Medieval and Renaissance Art and History major and as nerdy as it sounds, I’ve always wanted to also be a Holy Grail Historian which kind of stems in to the Arthurian Legends I adore. …I’m also obsessed with Avalon sob.
